Washi Paper Passed Down Since the Nara Period

Awa Washi (Awa Japanese Paper) is a type of traditional Japanese paper produced in Yoshinogawa City, Tokushima Prefecture. Known for its naturally soft texture and water resistance, this paper boasts a history dating back to the Nara period. Loved through the ages, Awa Washi continues to captivate people today. The History of Awa Washi

  • Started by Inbe clan

    Around 1,300 years ago, during the Nara period, a group of people serving the imperial court, known as the Inbe clan, settled in the land of Awa. Later called the Awa Inbe, they began cultivating hemp and mulberry trees, leading to the production of paper and textiles. This is said to be the origin of Awa Washi. The paper was offered to the imperial court in Nara and later presented to Kyoto during the Heian period(794-1185).

  • Significant growth driven by Lord Hachisuka’s support and the changing times

    In 1585 (Tenshō 13), when Lord Hachisuka entered Tokushima (then Awa Province), Awa Washi was among the four industries he promoted for economic development, leading to its expansion. During the Edo period, it was used for Awa Domain's official paper, banknotes, and calligraphy paper, while indigo-dyed washi, made with Awa's specialty indigo, spread nationwide. The industry reached its peak from the Meiji to Taisho periods.

  • Shift to Western Paper

    After World War II, the demand for paper in daily life shifted toward Western paper due to increasing Westernization. Handcrafted washi struggled against mass-produced Western paper and gradually disappeared from society. At its peak in the mid-Meiji period, there were 250 papermaking workshops, but their numbers steadily declined until only one remained. However, this last remaining company, dedicated solely to Awa Washi, has preserved its traditional craftsmanship and was designated as a National Traditional Craft in 1976 (Shōwa 51).

Characteristics and Future of Awa Washi

  • Comfort Born from Natural Materials

    Awa Washi is made from natural fibers such as mulberry (kōzo), mitsumata(Oriental Paperbush), gampi, mulberry tree, bamboo, and hemp. Despite being thin, it is strong and flexible, embodying the unique texture of Japanese paper. The pleasant softness and durability created by these materials continue to be valued, earning admiration from across Japan.

  • Exploring New Uses

    Today, Awa Washi is produced for a wide range of modern applications, including photo inkjet printing paper, art paper, and interior design materials. To promote awareness of this traditional craft, workshops offer hands-on papermaking experiences, actively fostering a new Washi culture to pass on to future generations.
