Large ceramic pieces such as water jars, indigo vats, and lotus pots are well known, and the “Nerokuro” technique used in their creation is a traditional method unique to Ōtani-yaki. With a commitment to using local clay, a wide variety of practical daily utensils are also produced, offering an original blend of rustic charm and modern Japanese style. The climbing kiln has been designated a Registered Tangible Cultural Property of Japan, and one of its now-unusable chambers has been adapted to house a *suikinkutsu* (water harp cave), allowing visitors to enjoy its delicate sounds and earning the site the name “the kiln where you can hear the music of a suikinkutsu.” The climbing kiln, built rising from flat ground, is among the largest of its kind in Japan and is truly an impressive sight.
